Summary

They say when you assume you make an ass of you and me.Matt wishes that the Avenger's assumptions about his seeming inability to read the written word did something as benign as making an ass of him and them. Being called illiterate shouldn't hurt, not when he knows he's not, and it's not like he can tell them the truth. Not that the truth would make much difference. He's just going to have to grin and bear it. If he can.

Loved this! Can't wait for the update :3

Chapter 1

Just now

This is great. I love how the Avenger's interactions with Daredevil changes as they come to know about his affliction, and how their disrespect hurts Matt. Also I like how the police have problems with his handwriting and then scorn him because of rumours of his illiteracy. I like that they come to the conclusion that he must be retarded not to read and how hurtful it is. This is a rich and believable story. I love how Daredevil prevents Clint from killing Hydra and tries to keep the Avengers from killing people.

This is amazing! As somebody who is deaf, you brilliantly captured the difficulties of being ignored and overlooked, so thank you :) I look forward to the epilogue!

Ohh this was so great. The Avenger were wrong on assuming that of Matt but it's un derstandable when in their eyes Markw as making this "silly" mistakes that could've been avoidabble reading something somewhere.

So awesome. This is the story i didn't realise I needed. All of it is so great. All their reactions are believable. Foggy is brilliant. Matt needs so many hugs. I really felt for him when the police and Tony made all those mean comments, and when Nat didn't trust him and left him behind. And Matt's passionate speech was so great. In short I loved everything about this fic. Looking forward to the update.

This is *utterly* fantastic. This was a treat for me to read the ending because I hadn't got a chance to look that section over before you posted! I know I said this in my beta notes, but I want to repeat it here because I want to make it public. As I read that last fight scene, with your wonderful descriptions of the action sequences and Matt's experience of it, it called to mind that intense scene in episode 2 of the first season, where Matt just kept going and going, pushing through all the exhaustion and pain. Very vivid and very well done.I think you did a wonderful job of portraying ableism both realistically and sensitively. I have a mentally handicapped brother and tend to cringe whenever I hear or read the word 'retarded', but I didn't this time because the use of it was appropriate.Looking forward to the next section!

... I'm probably gonna walk around being angry at fictional characters 'til you update this.

This is fantastic. I love how you handled Matt not wanting the Avengers to know he is blind vs his dilemma of letting them think he is illiterate. Absolutely fascinating, I loved every bit of it.

I think what I love most about this story is how awesome a best friend Foggy is. Who wants to be a part of superhero boyband when all you need is your own Foggy Nelson.

This was very thoughtfully written, and extremely respectful of the difficulties experienced by disabled people. Fantastic job. One thing I thought of afterwards (I took a language impairments course in university): it's interesting that upon learning "he can't read", the Avengers immediately jumped to "because he never learned how". There are a number of neurological conditions that affect a person's ability to read, dyslexia being the most well known. Especially if he can't read numbers. Numbers are very easy to learn, compared to letters, there being only 10 that don't go together in stupid ways. (English is so, so stupid. It's a liguistic nightmare.) Our numbers use Arabic symbols, as opposed to Roman, and the original character forms were designed so that they had the same number of angles in the character as it represented. You didn't have to be great shakes at reading as long as you can count the corners. 1 looked a lot more like 7, with only one angle. 2 was written like Z, with two angles. 3 was written like a sideways M, with three angles, and 4 has the three inside angles and the angle underneath to make four. And so on. So since our numbers were literally designed so that anyone, even those who were illiterate, could quickly learn to recognize them, when someone can't read numbers it suggests that rather than not knowing how to read, they physically can't. Granted, when people are told you literally can't do something, well, that's a whole new face of ableism. Especially if it's an invisible condition, or rare; or even worse, both. Still, tsk tsk Avengers, for immediately concluding that he wasn't intelligent enough/motivated enough/educated enough/etc to learn to read. Because telling a person with a permanent disability that they just aren't trying hard enough is pretty much one of the worst things ever. And I say that from experience. Matt would probably not have had that problem, because blindness doesn't really count as an invisible disability. It's a physical condition that's easy to identify, and no one's going to tell him that he could see if he tried a little harder. But if he really did have a neurological condition that interfered with his brain's ability to correctly process and interpret abstract visual symbols, the Avengers' reaction would have been the worst possible thing they could have done to him. For shame. I'm not objecting to your portrayal. Absolutely people do it all the time, that's why it's the worst. Matt himself might not notice the potential for devastation their actions and words had, because again, doesn't actually have an invisible disability affecting his visual processing... But I thought it worth pointing out that it would have hurt him even more than it already did if it was so.

I need the next chapter bad. im so mad at the avengers for assuming, and i wanna punch the cops for their bs ableist slurs, it's always jaring when you hear things like that.

This is a fantastic read. I have a mental illness that I generally cope with, but can be debilitating in some circumstances. I still feel worried about people's reaction if I tell them. I worry if suddenly my professional ability diminishes in their eyes. And of course there are always people who think they have the answer to fix something I have lived with my entire life. I am glad you addressed how growing up people probably underestimated Matt because of his impairment. I am very glad there seems to be a second chapter to the story because the ending seems kinda final. I am not sure how the avengers can redeem their behavior, but I'm interested how you get their paths to cross again. Maybe by visiting Matt Murdoch? hahah Look forward to the next part.

I really enjoyed you story, but something in the begining bothered me. The scene when Steve tells Matt about the internet and Daredevil thinks that it's inaccessible to him. Blind people can use the internet and unless Matt is just to impatient or just bad at technology, it's actually quite simple. Electronic devices (not all, notably apple) has this app called voiceover built in. And that read everything outloud (like audiodescription for when you naviguate with the mouse, it also works for the touchscreen with double tap. Once for the description and twice for the function). The voice is very fast and it's they are just as good as sighted people.

You are incredible "You don’t listen to me,’ he repeats in a near whisper. ‘So why the FUCK would I trust you,’ he roars, the devil finally crawling free and raising his voice, ‘when you can’t even manage to listen to me about my needs and my abilities.’ "I love this part

Wow - this story is incredible. Your Daredevil is incredible! And I love how badass he is, even in the badass company of the Avengers. He's the stoic, moral, calm-but-fiery-when-provoked, and yes, stubborn as fark DD of canon and easily the most believable I've found in fanfic! I LOVE how you describe what he knows through his heightened senses, and the detail is just astonishing. Foggy is awesome too! I love the bond that those two have, and how Foggy understands what Matt's going through even though he's sighted, just because he knows his friend so well and is so perceptive.I really liked your Avengers too - I mean, they have been well-meaning but arrogant dicks so far but now that DD gave them a piece of his mind they are working on it. Steve in particular being disgusted with himself for forgetting what it was like to be overlooked, ignored, mocked, condescended to... that was a brilliant touch.I'm delighted to see more chapters ahead - fantastic!! I'm off for more :)

I've read through this like 4 times in the last week, I love it so much. Your portrayal of all the characters is spot on. And I love the little details you put in, like how early in the story the hydra agent's phone was unlocked by typing in HYDRA on a standard keypad, then later, when Stark gives Daredevil the tablet, the password can spell DEVIL on the standard keypad! I love it! <3

This is... OMG I want to cry so badly. I can't describe how amazing this is, it is so well written, and the feelings and everything is so perfectly described, its... my heart is broken. And you know even though the Avengers are kind of mean and I want to punch them I think that their answer to that it would be completely normal for any human, which is completely awful. I'll keep reading immediately an de i hope it continues like this. Thanks I love itLove,T.

Fucking hell, that vulnerability that Matt has is amazing!!! That saying of sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. Sometimes it feels so pointless, because words do hurt. They do.I love how Matt has interacted with everyone and the characterizations are all amazing!!!!Thanks for posting.

I absolutely love this story! I have read it twice before, and today on a long car ride I had the oppertunity to listen to Badfinch’s audio version. It was absolutely amazing and I can really appreciate all of the time and effort both of you have put into making this story accurate and realistic while still being funny and charming. All around wonderful job. You should both be very proud of yourselves

Chapter 1

Just now

The only issue I have with this story is the alarm vs lights thing. There's no reason for him to hit the alarm even from the Avenger's perspective. The cops and Avengers are already there, inside the building even, so what's the point? Given that it's a silent alarm that only Matt can hear (what's the point of that anyway besides a plot device? real silent alarms are literally silent, just sending out a call to the cops or external security), it's not even useful as a distraction. The Avenger's absolutely would have realized this and if you really wanted to make them stupid enough not to, Matt, as an argumentative lawyer should have pointed it out, not just said he "hit what he was aiming for".

Chapter 1

Just now

Actually, I forgot to also mention, if they thought he accidentally hit the lights, why do they think he didn't immediately turn them back on? That whole situation is a contrived misunderstanding that makes no sense. Even regular SWAT and military types turn the lights out or use smoke grenades all the time as a tactic. For all the Avengers know, Matt has advanced night vision built into his suit too.

Chapter 1

Just now

The avengers were not that wrong, though. Matt never told them he was blind, and if he really had been illiterate, then his actions really would have been irresponsible.

Okay, MATT MURDOCK NEEDS A HUG SO BADLY. It's easy to see Matt react this way. Poor boy had to prove himself for the most part of his life and that's just sad. Avengers seem pretty in character to me. Glad Daredevil had their asses kicked with words. Ah, and Matt & Foggy dynamics warms my heart.

Chapter 1

Just now

My god have I never been this angry at characters, and at the avengers no less. It was like every emotion Matt was feeling I was feeling too and it was painful but really amazing how you could do that to me with just words. But, then again, it was just words that made Matt feel these emotions in the first place, so maybe it’s not ‘just’ words but painful and frustrating words. Ok I’m gonna go read the next chapter cause I want relief.
