Summary
To truly know someone is to differentiate between who they once were, who they are now, and who they're capable of being. Hermione realises the duality of one man as she rectifies what she knows of the past and begins to understand the pieces of who Draco Malfoy is now: a father, a son, and a man.

Just nowAlready this is such a haunting post-war world you’ve built with such echoes from history. I’m excited that we have a whole story ahead .

Just nowthank you so much. lately i’ve been feeling my interest in the dramione community waning, because of drama but mostly because i haven’t found a fic that i could immerse myself in. understandable because in the current state of the world, many writers don’t have the time or energy to pour themselves into stories written for free. but this story, my gosh THIS story! what beautiful world building, fantastic characterizations! i could feel the doom and despair of the british wizarding community after the war. i could FEEL kingsley’s weary soul after fighting for so long and achieving nothing, only wanting peace in his life after everything. your description of theo’s person had me chuckling as i read. just the little snippets like:“Theo picked up a small stack of folders—likely the hospital's fiscal budget for next year—and cleared his throat with his fist covering his mouth. "The tea…"Hermione smirked because sometimes Theo's quiet nature made him appear aloof, but his little signals gave him away. They had been friends for a few years now, and he still wasn't used to asking for what he wanted… when it actually pertained to himself. "I'll send some by way of Pansy.""Thank you."”oh my gosh i can’t describe this as anything else but cute. also i love this kind of theodore nott. the one where he’s like a living chess game, always aware of what’s around him and how he composes himself, thinking five steps ahead of anyone else. you’ve done a wonderful job introducing every single character so far, even little glimpses of pansy were sprinkled in when talking of her relationship to the character in the scene. you’ve done this thing, in introducing characters, that i think is particularly talented which is not giving out their whole biography in one chunk. like you didn’t list out everything they’ve been doing since the end of the war, you only shared information that was relevant to the topic of whatever conversation hermione was having, whether that was in her own head or with another person. truly loving what’s going on. i’m satisfied with the information i’ve learned so far, yet curious about more! at first i thought the mysterious patient would be draco, the typical healer/patient relationship trope, but then i figured it wouldn’t be him because he’s the leader of the terrorism task force and they wouldn’t keep him on if he were diagnosed with dementia. so then i was wondering if it could possibly be scorpius? to bring hermione around draco, but scorpius is much too young for a disease like that right? so maybe it is narcissa.... i don’t know!! so eager to find out tho. thank you so much for your amazing writing!

Just nowWhat a fantastic first chapter. I've been excited and inspired to watch this come to life over sprint and can't wait to read it. I loved the careful characterization of Theo (and the mystery of him, too), the glimpse at Daphne, the understanding into the motivations of Kings and Hermione (and their backstory).I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Just nowYou did a wonderful job pulling us in & making each character very intriguing. I like how you’ve interwoven their life’s and look forward to more . I’m also very curious to see what drove Hermione away from the Ministry.

Just nowBeautiful first chapter!! I can't wait to see where you're taking us, and how everything will unfold! 💚 I love that you call it your "nothing to something to everything" fic... Does it get better than that? 💚

Just nowThis was a beautiful first chapter, I cannot wait for more. The post-war world you have built is incredible and that nothing is fixed all at once just because Voldemort is dead is so realistic. The characterization of everyone so far has been brilliant. Even the small details make them so alive, I can't wait to see more of them. Your writing is so descriptive and immersive, I can't wait to follow along with this!

Just nowWhat a great start to what for sure will be a great story :D post-war Dramione is my favourite Dramione <3Your writing style is mesmerizing! Can't wait for more. I'm especially interested in Narcissas style of raising Scorpius.

Just nowI am so EXCITED!! Congrats on finally starting to post - how exciting!! I've subscribed and will be following along. <3 Really liked how you set us up in this first chapter. I feel like I have a good understanding of how this world works (including some pretty bitter comparisons to our own, unfortunately). The world you've made feels *real* to me, and I'm excited to see how your characters are going to play within it. Also: Kingsley as an apiculturist. My heart!

Just nowWow, really excited to see how this will all unfold! Ready to go on a journey with this slow-burn :)

Just nowI made an AO3 account SOLELY for this story. And can I just say, I’m glad I did! I love the introductory and the setting up of the plot, Hermione’s inquisitiveness and stubborn personality along with her quick witted and well thought out responses, THEO 😍, and the insights to all the relationships pertaining to Hermione. I just KNOW this is going to be brilliant. But you already know what I think, I’ve been flailing at you about this for ages now 🤣 so so so excited for the next update! What a fantastic chapter ! Xxxx

Just nowI like the header. It's got great colors.I like the setting - Theodore's hospital, him, what Hermione does professsionally.I love their negotiations.""The Ministry has sent over an informal offer for you to join the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. They want me to discuss it with you." Theo picked up his teacup and took a sip. "This is me discussing it with you."" XDI love the glimpse at Harry and Hermione's friendship."I am my own security." This sounds badass.I think Scorpius will be Hermione's patient.I like Daphne's visit.I like Hermione's talk with Kingsley.

Just nowFabulous start!! I’m already so intrigued by so much. The world building, to start. The actual lack of recovery from the war is both an excellent touch (no perfect bows here) and also gives me shivers of reminders of our current climate. And the characters! Hermione has certainly grown up. Theo - I can tell he’s going to be fun. And a nice intro to Daphne and Kingsley. So many good hints at what’s going on with the Malfoys throughout the chapter. I’m really excited for the next bit! And holy, 165k already? You beast! ♥️

Just nowOooh I am so excited that, for the first time, I can follow along as you write!Such an interesting start. This post-world war seems real. No society emerges from war having learnt all their lessons in one go, and things are not all sunshine and rainbows. Most likely, things remain the same, just with new faces and new names, and that is what seems to be happening here.I have always been convinced that much of the Order, with their grand plans to build the wizarding world from the ashes, would be disillusioned pretty quickly with all the red tape they have to face. And while a lot of fanfictions depict Hermione realising the futility of what she is trying to do and leaving the ministry, I like how you have shown this discontent in a strong character like Kingsley. I look forward to seeing more of this world. Also I looooove when Hermione is friends with the Slytherins. One of my favourite aspects of Broken is their dynamic, so I can't wait to explore the relationships you have created in this one! Plus, I adore Theo, and missed him sorely in Broken, so yay!In any case, absolutely love this, hooked already! And thank you for not, as you phrased it, "jumping right into feels punching" haha!

Just nowWith just one chapter, I know this will be another one of your masterpieces. Already one of my favorite WIPs.
Otterly_Riddikulus_Writing
Just nowThis is one of the best first chapters that I have read in a long bloody time. Honestly, you have such a way with words that makes you feel like you are IN the world you are building.I am so agitated to read more already! I beg, on my knees - 🙏🙏 - for at least weekly updates. Every two weeks will kill me!!!
Blessedindeed
Just nowThis is incredible! And, yes, so wonderfully dense... so much is unfolding, some mystery and exposition & background setting up.... I’m in awe & so very excited to follow you on this path!!!

Just nowI'm enjoying this story very much and look forward to the journey you're leading us on-- thank you for sharing!

Just nowI am SO excited to read this. Your world building is fantastic. I’m really immersed in this post-Voldemort world. Especially the politics. I’m super intrigued about what the final straw was that made Hermione’s leave her job. Plus, obvious, I’m dying to know who the mystery patient is! I’m thinking it’s Draco. But it may also be Scorpius??? Guess I’ll just have to read and find out! Thanks so much for this already-amazing story!! :)

Just nowHave you ever read the first few lines of a book, and then stopped, went to get a cup of tea, and a snack because you know this is going to be one of “those” reads - when you get so caught up in the story line that you will forget everything else ?Well - that’s exactly what I did when I clicked on chapter one of Measure of a Man. This introductory chapter was intriguing, engaging and expertly written, and I know this is going to be a story I will savour. There was so much to love about this chapter and I was in particular awe of the way you moved your characters around like chess pieces - having them play off one another, and introducing us to little tidbits of information about their lives that told us just enough to make the reader curious about their lives and how they got to where they currently are. I love Theo Nott as a character because he truly is a canon blank slate and he can be many different characters - the villain, the romantic lead or a little or both or neither. I really like his elegant minimalism, and how intensely private he is. Daphne and Kingsley were developed with such care and I hope we get to learn more about the pie eating pregnant woman and the bee keeper. I love the little drops of information we have about Harry and Ron and Draco - so intriguing !!But while we are speaking of characterizations, I must tell you that I already adore this very canon Hermione but one who has lost a little (or a lot) of her youthful lustre as she has grown older and life has taken more hits on her. I love her finely honed intellect and her sense of her own worth, which I am thinking was very hard fought . I also appreciated that she likes her men tall as I do - 😜I loved the way you are building the world of Measure of a Man. The politics, the violence , the threats , the relationships-like a master chess player you can see how you are preparing the board. It’s truly amazing !And the way you write - you make me simultaneously want to stop writing altogether because I could never write this well, and to practice more so I can be this good.I am so curious about Hermione’s job, her mystery patient, and all the history of what has happened in the last decade or so..... you have me completely strapped into the passenger side, yelling “shotgun”Thank you for writing something so wonderful and engaging and I truly look forward to reading the next two chapters you have posted.Perhaps not right away because like a good cup of tea this chapter should be savoured !! ❤️❤️

Just nowI've been reading along since you started posting, but now that you're moving to weekly updates I realize I haven't been leaving comments, only running to twitter to bully my friends into reading this with me, lmao. Fixing this now, as well as rereading before catching up with the new update! :) I can't even begin to explain how excited I am for this story! Your writing is the kind that stays with you for a long time, long after you first read it. There's something very personal about your style, it's haunting as it is introspective and it's resonated with me for years. I read Broken many years ago, when it was already complete, so it's very exciting to be following this journey now, right as it unfolds! I'm really digging Hermione as a healer and I'm even more excited because my field is neuropsychology, so you got my full attention from the second i saw the tags. I can already tell this will be a deep dive into everything dementia entails, which can be extremely hard to tackle but I'm confident that you'll touch upon it carefully and delicately, making it another memorable ride. This Hermione feels older, wiser, but still very human. I love her already. I'm very intrigued by Theo, he's one of my favorite side characters in fics and while right now he's hard to figure out, I'm wondering what his intentions are and how he'll come into play later on. The same goes for Daphne and Kingsley, they were very welcome additions and I wanna keep reading more of them. I could feel Kingsley's exhaustion and disappointment from that short scene. The commentary on the political climate post war feels daunting given the current circumstances lol but I'm still curious to see how that comes up again going forward. I like that you went down that route, because I don't believe everything magically worked itself out once Voldemort fell. Anyway, this was super long, but I'm very excited for this story! Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us!

Just nowThis story is brilliant, love Theo and Kingsley, the plot and the characterization is all so on point. Dunno why I didn’t see this story earlier, can’t wait to read more. Thanks for writing

Just nowI’ve just finished ‘Broken’ today and started this story because of the many chapters it already had, but wow, I really like it so for and Scorpius seems adorable! I really enjoy your way of writing and keeping the characters so true to their nature. Do you have a upload schedule or is it random? So I’ll know when to check up on it. I’m quite new to this website. :) Kelly

Just nowLooking forward to this. Curious to read reason why Hermione left Ministry. I’m always interested in how the former Slytherin students (Pansy, Draco, Daphne, Theo, etc) of Hogwarts are doing. I guess cuz it seem like Gryffindors always were the main feature in the movies. It seems that Malfoys classmates are protective of him and I’m glad. Cuz I always feel self-righteous Gryffindors like the Greatest witch of all time are always thinking the worse of Slytherins. People like Slughorn and Snape were very good people. 🤷♀️Anyway, love first chapter.

Just nowFabulous start!!!

Just nowJeez! I’m brand new to this story and I Cannot wait to see where it goes. I’m loving that Hermione and Kingsley are enjoying hobby farms. What a great outlet! Cheers and thank you for this story!

Just nowHi, does this fic have a happy ending (I.e. do they end up together?). I’m not asking for a spoiler, I just can’t take angst without a happy ending.
peaceisalwaysbeautiful
Just nowFirst of all, I cannot take on another WIP. I CANNOT. Which is what i told myself when I saw all the beautiful art, and read all the love on discord, AND EVEN AS I clicked on this. But here I am. Taking it on. Because I also Do Not Like to be Left Out. This lives up to the hype so far. Youre very good at world building and descriptive prose. Which, makes me feel like I'm in for a lot of pain? But also that I'll be happy? about? it? So anyway, consider me hooked.
internct
Just nowBack to the beginning!! This intro to Theo as a potential romantic candidate is so interesting now seeing the qualities that he shares with Draco: quiet person with a loud mind, intelligent and observant while being private and stubborn. Interior designer Pans, I'm allllll over it! I love how every character pulls their own weight in this story, even from the briefest mention, and how much you flesh out the political situation -- it's totally immersive. You hit the wholesome yet critical tone of Hermione right from the get-go and I know I'm rereading but I feel sucked into her character all over again. I'm newly hooked into her analysis of everything here especially now realising how much she misses too. All the hinting around her incident - the fact that she's not even totally aware what happened. The way she can see that Theo "still wasn't used to asking for what he wanted... when it actually pertained to himself" but she does the same thing!! "Summers were full of growth, life, and hard work" -- and it's the summer solstice party that pushes us into the something phase, nudges her further into these things. Her house is def a refuge but baby we gotta thrive not just survive! The heartache for Scorp is already tangible, so glad to be seeing the bb get a bit closer to play every day. Bless Kingsley and his apiary, a place Hermione can relax outside of her own home. And for picking up that Draco must be lonely. His life after 16 is marked by tragedy, resilience, and constant fight. The tiredness we see in him can't be something wholly new, though I'm interested to see what sort of emotional respite he got during his marriage to Astoria. Also to find out more about his relationship with his father - to lose him so soon after the war, without the time or possibly opportunity to work through all those hard feelings, must have been a lot for him to deal with. As much as his work is to protect himself and his family, I wonder if there's an element of it that is for Lucius. I can imagine Hermione coming back here next March in a very different place, with a very different understanding of who Draco is. "It's okay to be afraid, Hermione. You know what isn't okay? Letting that fear stop you." SOMEONE TELL HER THIS AT THE END OF 16.
asongstress1422
Just nowyou've laid such intriguing ground work. Things are being said that arne't verbialized, you created a believeable world in the after math of a war, seen by someone who wanted to protect and fix everything but has constantly been gaslit until she breaks."The bees are quiet today." Kingsley broke the peaceful silence between them. "I think the storm coming will be a bad one. You should take precautions with your garden." "I already have." He nodded, still looking in the distance at his bees. "Good." -- gah!the amount of deepness to this conversation is staggering.respected colleges, two smart minds, friends... so good
