We want words that would make the reader in Jack's POV to feel like they would be very scared of the Grim man. Stare doesn't convey much emotions on its own. Scowl can convey displeasure or pain. Feral conveys the state of mind behind the the pained scowl, making the Grim man verbally feel more frightening. "Jack lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding, staring at the unconscious man lying limp on his stomach, staining Jack's suit with his blood." "Jack Desmond swallows hard,"
